Owing to parenthood and its accompanying demands and broke-ness, The Wife and I don’t get much in the way of nights on the town. We didn’t today either, but by God we had a Federal Holiday and a visiting Grandma so we stuck her with The Kid and went to see a matinee at the Hollywood Arclight/Cinerama Dome Theatre.
Short-form: There is still Glory to be found in the craft of acting.
I say this having seen too few movies in the theatre recently, but the last two have been “Brokeback Mountain” and now “Capote.”
(What can I say? I loves me dem Gays.)
It’s going to be a tough call for March 5th.
Confining myself to the Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Director categories I would still have to see “Crash”, “Munich”, and “Good Night and Good Luck” in the next twelve days to make an informed pick of my own.
BTW, nothing personal against Terrence Howard, but I’m not bothering to seek out the one theatre in the state that’s still playing “Hustle and Flow.”
Pimps as heroes is simply not an idea I feel any liberal guilt about dismissing sight unseen.
Also, nothing against the other four very talented Best Actress nominees, but anytime Dame Judi Dench is nominated for something I figure everyone else might as well get some laundry done.
Anyway, “Capote”, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener, every person involved in the movie start to finish: Wow. Just breath-taking, heart-breaking, inspiring work. So gratifying to see Indisputable Art coming out of America these days.
Even if it was all shot in Canada…
“Because only Allah is perfect.”
