Because we as a country allow our leaders to torture people and get away with it.
I’ve lost track of how many cases there have been in which innocent people have gotten caught up in the meat-grinder of our horrible intelligence. The case of 35 year-old Maher Arar is just the latest one to catch my eye.
Because the Canucks have caught our madness over the past five years we had this poor guy shipped off to Syria (our ally?) to be tortured for a year. Imagine that. You’re innocent. You’re grabbed up, shipped to Syria and tortured for a year.
We do this. We know we do this. And we allow our leaders to brag about it and legislate so they can keep doing it.
We deserve every scrap of contempt the world hurls our way, now and for all time. By allowing Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, and Gonzales to breathe air outside a prison cell we put our names to this obscenity.
