Changing my vote on California State Measure 90. A good buddy with a law degree (for some reason I have a lot of those) informed me that buried within this apparently benign measure to restrict the state’s power of Eminent Domain was a clause which would enable any property owner wishing to re-purpose his property to demand compensation from the state if the state refused to allow such re-purposing.
F’rinstance:
CALIFORNIA PROPERTY OWNER
State of California, as a maker of widgets I currently earn X dollars a year. If I tear down my widget store and re-purpose the site as an open-air nuclear waste dumping ground I could make X-plus a bazillion dollars a year.
STATE OF CALIFORNIA
We can’t allow you to do that.
CALIFORNIA PROPERTY OWNER
Why then you, State of California, must compensate me X-plus a bazillion dollars a year, as mandated by the recently passed California State Measure 90!
The moral of the story is: “Never side with conservative Republicans. They’re always up to something.”
